Meaning · English

Haridra, the golden one, the yellow one, the one called night, she of fine colour; worm-slayer, haladi, dear to women, the one who plays in the market. Turmeric is pungent and bitter, dry and hot; it settles kapha and pitta, brings colour to the skin, and removes skin disorders, meha, blood disorders, swelling, pallor and wounds.

The names come first, and most are about colour. Haridra and pita both point to yellow. Kanchani means golden. Varavarnini is 'she of fine colour', a word also used for a lovely woman. Nisha, night, is a standing name for turmeric across the lexicons, and the text gives no reason for it. Krimighni means worm-slayer. Haladi is simply the spoken word, our haldi. Yoshitpriya, dear to women — perhaps a nod to its use in women's cosmetic and wedding customs. Hattavilasini, 'the one who plays in the market', is a cheerful nod to a root sold at every stall. Then the qualities, as the text teaches them. Turmeric tastes pungent and bitter. It is dry and heating. It settles kapha, the heavy, moist principle, and pitta, the principle of heat and change; the text counts it against pitta despite its heat. It is varnya, good for the complexion. It is listed against skin disorders, meha (urinary disorders), blood disorders, swelling, pallor and wounds.

Anyone who has peeled fresh turmeric root at the kitchen counter knows the result: fingertips stained deep gold for a day, however much you scrub. That stubborn colour is the plant's whole character in one picture. A root that marks everything it touches came to be named golden, yellow and fine of colour, and was trusted to lend that colour to skin.

Today turmeric is above all a kitchen spice. It colours and flavours dal, curries and rice, and it is eaten safely in ordinary food amounts every day across India. Its main yellow compound, curcumin, has drawn a great deal of laboratory interest for effects on inflammation and on skin. Results in people have been mixed and modest, partly because the body absorbs curcumin poorly from food. There is no modern match for kapha and pitta, and no good evidence that turmeric treats the conditions the old list names. Eating it in meals is one thing. Taking concentrated capsules is another: these have been linked to rare liver problems and can interact with blood thinners and some other medicines. Anyone pregnant, on regular medication or awaiting surgery would do well to ask a doctor before taking turmeric as a supplement.
