Meaning · English
The messengers bow to Lakshmana, leave praising Rama, and bow at Ravana's feet. Laughing, he asks: your own welfare; Vibhishana, death near; the bear-monkey host; the ocean; the ascetics. Did they meet, or turn back at my fame? Why so startled?
A few Awadhi words carry the scene. Dūta is a messenger, here a spy sent in disguise. Kāla is Time, the force that ends things, and Ravana says it has driven the enemy army to him. Kīṭa is a small insect, and java is barley. Ravana says Vibhishana will be a weevil in the grain, ground up with it. Tapasī means ascetics, his name for Rama and Lakshmana. Trāsa is fear, and he claims their hearts are full of it. Cakita is startled. The spies leave Rama's camp praising his qualities, then bow at Ravana's feet. Ravana laughs and asks first after the spy's own welfare. Then he asks about his brother Vibhishana, whom he says death is close to, for leaving Lanka. Next he asks about the bear and monkey army, which he says Time has pushed forward. He says the ocean has gone soft and is no guard for them. He asks about the ascetics he claims fear him. Did they meet in battle, or did they hear his fame and turn back? Tulsidas gives Ravana a scoffing tone, and then a plain observation. He sees the spy's mind is startled. The questions are meant to hear good news, and the spy's silence already tells him otherwise.
A man jokes loudly about the coming storm, calling it nothing, while he keeps glancing at the sky. The jokes are Ravana's questions, and the glances are his need to hear that the enemy has not come.
