Meaning · English

The spies, bound by the monkeys, openly praised Rama's nature and lovingly forgot their hiding. Sugriva ordered them maimed and sent back; the monkeys beat them. The spies cried out, swearing by Rama. Lakshman had them freed in mercy and gave them a letter for Ravana: give back Sita and meet us, or your time has come.

Three words carry this passage. Dūta is a messenger, and here a spy sent to look and report. Kulaghātī, the name Lakshman gives Ravana, means destroyer of his own family line. Ānā is an oath: to swear by someone's name. The story runs like this. The spies, caught and tied, find themselves praising Rama's nature aloud, so lovingly that they forget they are in disguise. The monkeys realise who they are and bring them bound to Sugriva. Sugriva orders them mutilated and sent off. The monkeys beat them, and the spies cry out that anyone who cuts their nose or ears will answer to the oath of Rama, lord of Kaushal. Lakshman hears this, calls them close, laughs, and frees them out of pity. He gives them a letter for Ravana and tells them to read it to him: it is his word. The message to the proud one is plain. Give back Sita and meet Rama, or your time has come. Tulsidas shows the cost of cruelty set beside the mercy of Rama's side. The spies are saved by Rama's name, which they had just been praising. The reading asks only that we notice how mercy is given even to an enemy's agents.

A shopkeeper catches a boy stealing, lets him go with a note for his father, and the note simply states what is owed. The spies are the boy, Lakshman's letter is the note, and Sita's return is the debt named plainly.
