Meaning · English

'Friend, your plan is good; do it, if fate helps.' Lakshmana, pained, says: dry the sea; only the lazy cry 'fate.' Rama calms him, bows to the sea, sits on kusha grass. Ravana's spies, disguised as monkeys, watch and praise his love for the refuge-seeker.

Three words carry the passage. Daiva is fate, what is handed to a person apart from his own effort. Kadar is a faint-hearted man, one whose mind has nothing firm to stand on. Saranagata is one who has come for shelter: sarana is refuge, agata is arrived. Rama first tells Vibhishana, here called friend, that the plan of asking the ocean is a good one, and that he will carry it out if fate helps. Lakshmana dislikes this advice and is hurt by Rama's words. He asks what trust there can be in fate. He wants the ocean dried up in anger. A weak mind, he says, clings to the idea of fate, and it is the lazy who keep shouting 'fate, fate.' Tulsidas does not give Rama's reply in words. He says only that Rama explained it to his younger brother, went to the shore, bowed his head to the sea first, and sat on kusha grass. The doha turns to the other side. Ravana's spies, who followed Vibhishana, take monkey form, see everything, and in their hearts praise Rama's virtues and his love for those who come to him for shelter. The passage sets Lakshmana's anger beside Rama's courtesy, and shows the enemy's own men noticing which one is stronger.

Two brothers stand at a neighbour's locked gate. One wants to break it down. The other knocks, and waits. The knock does not show he lacks the strength to break it. It shows he is choosing the order in which to try things. Rama bowing to the ocean before any anger is that knock.
