The Seed Within Everything
Bhagavad Gita 10.39
Meaning · English
Whatever is the generating seed of all living beings, Arjun, that I am. Nothing moving or nonmoving, no creature at all, could exist without me.
Three words carry the verse. Bijam is a seed, the small thing from which a whole plant grows. Bhutam is a creature, anything that has come to be. Characharam is moving and nonmoving together: animals and birds, but also trees, hills and rivers. Krishna tells Arjuna that he is the seed of all beings, and that nothing in the whole range of existence, moving or still, can stand apart from him. The earlier verses named single peaks: the best poet, the best sage, silence, wisdom. This one drops the picking and says the same thing about everything. The reason follows from the list so far. A list of excellences might suggest that Krishna is present only in the finest things, and Arjuna could still wonder about the rest. The seed answers that. A seed is the beginning of every plant, the common and the rare alike. What it asks of Arjuna is to see that no being he meets on either side of the field lies outside this source. Shankara reads the seed as the cause of all that exists, the one reality underneath appearances. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord being the inner support of every soul and body. Madhva reads it as God being wholly distinct from the world while still its cause and sustainer.
A banyan tree stands in a village square, with shade, birds, swings and a shrine beneath it. All of it began as one seed smaller than a fingernail. Without that seed, no trunk, no roots, no shade. Krishna is described as that seed, and the whole crowded world as the tree.
1. Today, pick one ordinary living thing you pass: a weed in a pavement crack, a pigeon, a neighbour's dog. 2. Stop for one minute and look at it fully, as something that exists only because a source gave it being. 3. Do the same with one person you find difficult, and look for just that one fact about them. 4. Tonight, note whether your hurry or irritation shifted even slightly.
A man is walking to the bus stop at dawn, annoyed by the stray dogs sleeping on the footpath, the dust, the shouting vendor, and his own tiredness. He wants it all to be somewhere else. The verse, as Krishna gives it to Arjuna, would change that moment in steps. First he notices he is sorting the scene into what deserves attention and what does not. Then he hears the claim that the dogs, the vendor, the dust and he himself all share one source. He may slow his steps and look at the dog as a creature with its own life rather than an obstacle. His irritation may loosen a little, since ordinary experience confirms that attention given freely to something small tends to calm the person giving it. The limit is plain: the verse does not make the dogs leave, pay the vendor's rent, or lift the man's tiredness. It offers a way of seeing, and the bus still has to be caught. The teaching about God as the seed of all beings is the text's own, and is stated here as that.
