A Spark of Splendor
Bhagavad Gita 10.41
Meaning · English
Whatever being you find opulent, beautiful or glorious, know that all of it is born of only a part of my splendor.
Three words in the verse describe what catches the eye. Opulent means a thing that has come into full being, rich and abundant. Beautiful means it draws the heart. Glorious means it is full of strength and energy. Krishna tells Arjuna that wherever he meets any of these, he is looking at something that comes from Krishna's own tejas, a word for splendor or radiance, like the light and heat of a fire. The second key word is amsha, a part or portion. Each splendid thing is born of a part of that radiance, never the whole of it. Krishna has just listed many such glories and said they have no end. Here he gives Arjuna a rule for the ones he never named: any being that shines, in any field, has the same source. The reason is plain from the verses around it. Arjuna cannot hold a list of everything. A single test lets him recognize it anywhere. Shankara reads the splendor as the Lord's power, which is the only reality in these things. Ramanuja reads each as a part of the Lord's glory, with the Lord dwelling within it as its inner self. Madhva reads them as real and unequal, each holding a different measure of the Lord's power. All three agree that the shine is borrowed from its source.
A single lamp is carried through a dark house, and its flame is shared with a hundred small wicks at a festival. Each wick burns brightly in its own spot, yet every flame came from that one lamp. Beautiful, powerful things are the small flames. Krishna's splendor is the lamp they were lit from.
1. Today, pick one moment when something strikes you as excellent: a sunset, a neighbor's kindness, a cook's skill, a child's laughter. 2. Stop for ten seconds and look at it fully, without comparing it to your own life. 3. Say quietly to yourself, "This is a spark of something larger." 4. Tonight, recall the moment and notice whether your mood is lighter than it would be after an envious one.
A young batsman sits in the stands while a rival from another team makes a century. His stomach tightens. He starts counting what he lacks, and the afternoon turns sour. The verse offers him a different way to see it. Krishna tells Arjuna that every brilliant being carries a part of one splendor, and that none of it is a private possession. Step by step, the boy sees the rival's skill as splendor he is permitted to witness. Admiration takes the place of the count of what he lacks. He may watch the strokes closely and learn from them, since the verse gives him no reason to resent a source he also belongs to. Ordinary experience confirms that envy sours a day and wonder lightens it. The verse does not promise that the boy will stop wanting to score a century himself. It will not make the loss of his own place in the team hurt less, and it does not replace practice or a coach.
