Held by One Fraction

Bhagavad Gita 10.42

Meaning · English

Or what use is all this detail to you, Arjun? I pervade and support this entire creation, remaining situated in it by a single fraction of myself.

Three words carry the verse. Vishtabhya means to prop up from within, as a post holds a roof, so the support comes from inside and not from a distance. Kritsna means entire, with nothing left out. Ansha means a part, a fraction. Krishna tells Arjuna that he props up the whole creation with one ansha of himself. The plain sense is that the world, however vast, rests on a small portion of him. The reason comes from what has gone before. Krishna has been listing his glories to Arjuna, and he now stops the list. Detail can never finish, because he has already said his manifestations have no end. So he gives Arjuna the single fact the list was pointing to, and asks what a longer catalogue could add. What he asks of the listener is to stop counting and rest on that one fact. Shankara, as his tradition reads it, takes the fraction as a small share of the Lord's power, with the Lord himself undivided. Ramanuja reads the world as the Lord's body, which he sustains as its inner self. Madhva stresses that the world depends wholly on the Lord while the Lord depends on nothing.

A huge tent stands in a field, its canvas covering a whole wedding crowd. Seen from inside, it is a roof of countless folds and ropes. Yet one central pole, a small part of the whole structure, carries it. The tent is the creation with all its detail, and the pole is the single fraction that holds it up.

1. Tonight, step outside or stand at a window for two minutes and look at the sky or the farthest thing you can see. 2. While looking, name one worry from today and notice how large it feels against that view. 3. Before sleep, choose one task you have been over-planning and write only its single next step, leaving the rest unlisted. 4. Notice whether the shorter list feels lighter.

A boy lies on his roof during a power cut, the whole town dark, and finds more stars than he has ever counted. He starts naming them, then gives up. Krishna's words fit that moment. He has just spoken of glories without limit, and he now tells Arjuna that more detail is not the point, because one fraction of him holds all of it. Step by step, the verse takes the boy from counting to resting. The effort to know everything is set down, since it was never going to finish. What remains is the plain fact of being held inside something far larger than any worry he carried up the stairs. Ordinary experience agrees that a wide sky tends to quiet a racing mind. The verse does not promise that his exam, his father's illness or the next day's fear will shrink. It also does not replace a doctor, a teacher or his own work. It offers a different footing from which to meet them.
