Confusion Cleared

Bhagavad Gita 11.1

Meaning · English

Arjuna said: Out of kindness to me you have spoken the highest secret teaching about the self, and by those words of yours this bewilderment of mine has gone.

Arjuna speaks here, and what follows is his own view of what has happened to him. Three words carry it. Anugraha is a favour, a kindness given freely, not earned. Guhya is what is kept hidden, a confidence shared only with someone trusted. Moha is bewilderment, a mind clouded so that it cannot tell what is right. Arjuna says Krishna spoke out of kindness, that the teaching about the self was the most guarded kind, and that his bewilderment has left. The reason for the remark is the state he arrived in. At the start of the war he put down his bow, unable to tell duty from grief. Now he reports the fog lifted, and he credits the words, not his own cleverness. He receives it as a gift. The listener is shown a pattern: confusion gives way when a hard teaching is heard patiently and taken in. Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva each read this verse, and they differ on what the secret is: Shankara takes it as knowledge of the self, Ramanuja as devotion and surrender to the Lord, and Madhva as the Lord's supremacy over all. Arjuna also says only that the confusion is gone. The next verses show he still wants more.

Think of a windscreen fogged on a cold morning. You sit still, unable to see the road, and then someone turns on the warm air and wipes a clear patch. The road was always there. Arjuna's bewilderment is the fog, Krishna's words are the warm air, and the clear glass is the sight he now has of what is in front of him.

1. Tonight, write down one thing that has confused you lately, a choice or a quarrel, in a single plain sentence. 2. Beside it, note who has said something to you in the past month that helped, even slightly, and what exactly they said. 3. Thank that person today, by message or in person, in a sentence or two. 4. Tomorrow, reread your confusion and notice whether it feels smaller or the same. Write that down too.

A woman sits in a parked car outside her father's hospital ward, unable to decide whether to agree to the surgery the doctors have proposed. Her brothers disagree, the forms are on her lap, and every option feels wrong. Then the surgeon sits down with her, explains in plain terms what each path involves, and does not hurry. She does not suddenly feel calm, but the muddle sorts itself into a few clear questions. Arjuna describes something like that. His confusion lifts through being told something carefully by someone he trusts, and he says so openly. Ordinary experience bears this out: a problem said aloud to a patient listener often shrinks from a fog to a list. The verse does not promise that clarity ends grief or makes the choice easy. Arjuna's relief is also his own report in that moment, and the chapter goes on to show he still has questions. And where illness is involved, the doctor's advice is the thing to follow, not a verse.
