Hearing Before Seeing

Bhagavad Gita 11.2

Meaning · English

I have heard from you, lotus-eyed one, and in full detail, how all living beings come into being and pass away. I have heard, too, of your greatness, which does not perish.

Arjuna is summing up what Krishna has taught him so far, and the summary is his own. Three words carry it. Bhava is coming into being, and apyaya is the going back, the ending or dissolving; together they cover the whole life of every creature. Mahatmya is greatness, from words for great and self, so it points to the largeness of who Krishna is. Avyaya is what does not spend itself or decay. Arjuna says he has heard all this vistarasha, at length, and that Krishna's greatness is not one of the things that passes. He says it because the next verses are a request. He has listened and his confusion has lifted, but listening has reached its edge. Having been told that beings rise and fall while Krishna does not, he wants more than a description. He also calls Krishna lotus-eyed, a warm and personal word. It shows he is speaking as a friend who trusts him. On the commentators: Shankara reads the lasting greatness as the changeless Self that stays untouched while beings arise and dissolve. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord's own lordship and countless good qualities, as source and sustainer of all beings. Madhva stresses the Lord's complete independence and supremacy over everything he makes.

Someone has read every guidebook about a mountain: the routes, the seasons, the weather, the height. They know it well on paper. Then they stand at its foot and look up. Arjuna is that traveller. Hearing has given him the map in detail, and now he wants the mountain itself.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you have been taught and could explain well, but have never tested, such as patience, or speaking calmly when tired. 2. Write it in one sentence on paper. 3. Tomorrow, choose one real moment where it could apply, and write down when. 4. In the evening, spend two minutes noting whether you did it. If you did not, write what stopped you. Keep the note for next week.

A young woman is in a hospital corridor at night, her first labour just beginning. She has read every chapter about it and can name the stages in order. Now her hands shake, and the words on the page feel far from what her body is doing. Arjuna's position is close to hers. He has been taught in detail, and he says so, but he asks for more than telling. For her, the next steps are small. She tells the midwife what she fears. She asks to have the stages explained again, now that she is in them. She lets the people who have done this many times stay close. The reading gave her words, and the people in the room give her company. Ordinary experience confirms that knowing about swimming is not the same as being in the water. Still, none of this takes away the pain or the risk of labour, and it does not replace the care of the midwife and doctor, which she needs.
