Meaning · English
Rama calls Vibhishana dear, full of virtue. Vibhishana clasps his feet; old wishes wash away in love, and he asks for pure devotion. Rama grants it, anoints him with ocean water; flowers rain. Ravana's rage burned him; Rama saved him, gave unbroken kingdom.
Three words carry the passage. Bhagati is devotion, from bhaj, to share in: it is loving company with the Lord, not a ritual. Bāsanā is a leftover leaning, the faint scent that old wants leave in the mind. Amogha means never wasted, never missing its mark. Rama begins by naming Vibhishana's good qualities and calls him very dear. The monkey host hears this and shouts victory to the host of grace. Vibhishana drinks the words through his ears and is not satisfied. He takes Rama's feet again and again, because his love is too big for his chest. Then he speaks. He calls Rama master of all that moves and stands still, protector of the bowed, knower of hearts. He admits a small wish once sat in him, and says the river of love for Rama's feet has carried it off. His only request is for bhagati that purifies and that Shiva's mind delights in. Rama, steady in battle, says so be it, and at once asks for water from the sea. Rama adds that Vibhishana wants nothing, yet a sight of him is never wasted. He anoints Vibhishana with the water, and flowers pour down from the sky. Tulsidas closes with Vibhishana burning in Ravana's anger like a fire fanned by a fierce wind, until Rama lifted him out and gave him a kingdom that cannot be broken. The reciters hear the anointing as a crowning.
A traveller is handed a cup of water at a village well. He drinks, thanks the giver, and still keeps asking only to stay beside the well. Vibhishana is that traveller: Rama's welcome fills him, and he wants nothing more than to remain near Rama.
