Meaning · English
Listen, friend, my nature: whoever comes afraid, shedding pride, delusion, deceit, I treat as a saint. One who ties every bond into a cord at my feet, free of wants, lives in my heart. Those who serve others' good and love the twice-born's feet are dear as life.
Rama tells Vibhishana his own nature, and says Bhushundi, Shiva and Parvati know it. Three Awadhi words carry it. Sakha is friend, the name Rama now gives him. Mamata is mine-ness, the habit of calling people and things my own. Samadarsi is one who sees all alike. Rama begins with the hardest case: even a person hostile to living beings (carachar drohi), if he comes to Rama afraid and seeking refuge, is not turned away. Reciters usually read this as a general promise, which is also how Rama treats Vibhishana. The next lines say what the refuge-seeker lets go: pride, delusion, deceit and every pretence. Rama then names the bonds, mother, father, brother, son, wife, body, wealth, house, friends, family. He describes the person who gathers the pull of mine-ness from all of them, twists it into one cord and ties it to Rama's feet. That person is even-minded, wants nothing, and is steady in joy, grief and fear. Rama says such a person lives in his heart, as a miser's heart holds money. Rama says he takes bodily form for saints like Vibhishana. The doha adds the worshipper of God with form, who works for others' good, keeps firm to right conduct, and loves the feet of the twice-born. Rama calls them dear as life. This answers Vibhishana's worry that a man from Lanka has no standing. Rama replies with what he looks at: the heart, not birth or country.
Loose threads on a table pull every way and tie nothing. Twist them into one rope and knot it to a post, and the whole bundle holds. Mine-ness is the loose threads, scattered over family, house and money. Rama describes it gathered into one cord at his feet.
