Meaning · English

Greed, pride and envy dwell in the heart until Raghunatha comes in. Seeing your feet, my fears are gone. Low demon, I never did good, yet you embraced me. My fortune is boundless: my eyes have seen the feet Brahma and Shiva serve.

Vibhishana answers Rama's question about how he has fared. He says the faults lived in him until Rama did. Lobha is greed, moha is deluded clinging, matsara is envy, mada is pride. Mamata, the feeling of 'mine', is a dark night, and rag and dvesh, craving and hatred, are the owls that are happy in it. They keep their place in the mind only until the sun of the Lord's pratap, his glory and power, rises. Tulsidas pictures Raghunatha with bow, arrows and quiver, a guard standing at the heart's door. Then Vibhishana speaks of himself. He is well now, his heavy fears are gone, because he has seen the lotus feet. He says that whoever Rama favours is not touched by the three kinds of worldly pain. Reciters usually count these as pain of body, of the world, and of fate. Next comes his humility. He is a nisichar, a night-roamer, a demon, of the lowest nature, and has never done a good deed. Yet the Lord whom the sages' meditation could not reach embraced him gladly. So the verse gives the reason for his joy: it is Rama's kripa, grace, and nothing Vibhishana earned. The feet that Brahma and Shiva serve were seen with his own eyes.

A man who has done nothing to deserve it is walking through a railway station, and a great elder he never dared approach lifts him into his arms. The man is Vibhishana, the elder is Rama, and the stunned gladness is his cry that his fortune is boundless.
