Meaning · English

Rama embraces the bowing Vibhishana and asks how he lives among the wicked. Vibhishana answers: hell beats bad company; seeing your feet, I am well, if you have claimed me as servant. No one rests, even in dreams, until worshipping Rama.

Three words carry this. Kusala means well-being, being truly well, not just safe. Bhajan, from bhaj, is worship as sharing in the beloved, and it is the thing Tulsidas says rest depends on. Soka-dhama is a house of sorrow, and kama is craving; the closing couplet says craving is what fills that house. Rama seats Vibhishana beside Lakshmana and asks gently about his health and his family. Then he asks the harder question: how does a friend keep his dharma among a crowd of the wicked, day and night? Rama says he knows Vibhishana's ways. He calls him very skilled in right conduct, someone who has no taste for wrong. Vibhishana replies that living in hell would be better than keeping bad company, and he asks that the Creator never give such company. Now that he has seen Rama's feet, he says he is well, if Rama has known him as his servant and shown him grace. Tulsidas then widens it. He says no creature has well-being, nor even a moment of rest in a dream, as long as it does not worship Rama and leave craving behind. The point is that Vibhishana's ease came from arriving, not from leaving Lanka's comforts.

Picture someone who has slept for months in a loud railway waiting hall, always half awake for the next announcement. At last he lies down in his own house. The body knows the difference at once. Vibhishana's words say the same: rest comes from reaching home, not from a quieter room.
