Meaning · English
Placing him ahead, the monkeys went to Raghupati and saw the two brothers from afar. Vibhishana stood unblinking, eyes wet, and said: I am Ravana's brother, born of night-roamers, dark by nature, like an owl loving darkness. Hearing your fame, I came. Save me, Raghuvir.
Three words carry this passage. Nisicara means night-roamer, the name for Ravana's demon clan. Tamasa comes from tama, darkness, and describes a nature heavy and dull, drawn to harm. Sarana means refuge, the place you run to when you cannot protect yourself. The story first. Hanuman and the others honor Vibhishana by putting him in front and lead him to Rama. From a distance he sees the two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, whom Tulsidas calls givers of joy to the eyes. Rama's beauty stops him. He cannot blink, his eyes fill, and the hair on his body rises. Then he steadies his mind and speaks softly. His first words are not a plea. They are an honest account of himself: brother of Ravana, born in a demon line, sinful by temperament, like an owl who loves the dark. He hides nothing that might count against him. Only then does he say why he came: he heard Rama's good name, and Rama breaks the fear of worldly life. The last line asks plainly, save me, save me, you who take away distress and give the shelter-seeker comfort. Tulsidas places this right after Rama's own words about refuge, so the reader sees what that refuge looks like when someone actually arrives. The one who comes tells the truth about himself and trusts the name he has heard.
A man comes in out of a storm and stands dripping in a doorway. He does not claim to be dry or clever. He says where he is from and how cold he is, and asks only for the fire. Vibhishana's confession works the same way: he names his own darkness and asks for shelter.
