Meaning · English
Though guilty of a million brahmin-killings, one who comes to me I will not abandon. Turned to me, a million births' sins vanish. The pure-hearted reach me; guile I dislike. Frightened, he is kept like my own life. Bring him, smiling.
Rama is answering Sugriva, who fears Vibhishana is a spy. Rama's answer comes in four steps. First, the vow: even a man carrying the sin of a million brahmin-killings will not be given up if he comes in refuge. Second, the moment a living being turns toward Rama, the sins of a million births are destroyed. The Awadhi word is sanamukh, meaning face to face, turned toward. The turning is the whole point. Third, Rama says it is the nature of sinners not to love bhajan, the sharing in him that is worship. So a man with a wicked heart would not walk up to him in the first place. Rama says he is reached by a nirmal man, one with a washed mind. He has no liking for kapat, chhal and chidra, which are deceit, trickery and hidden fault. Fourth, he meets the spy worry directly. If Ravana sent Vibhishana to learn Rama's bhed, his secret, Rama says there is no fear and no loss to the monkey chief. Lakshmana can strike down every demon in the world in a moment. Even so, a frightened man who comes for shelter, Rama will keep like his own breath. Then he laughs and tells Sugriva to bring him, however he is.
A man walks away from a lit window, his shadow stretched out in front of him. He turns around, and the shadow falls behind him. The turning, not the length of the walk, changes it. Facing the light is what sanamukh means.
