Meaning · English
Monkeys took the arriving Vibhishana for a spy; Sugriva warned of a demon's disguise. Rama: my vow is to end a refugee's fear. Hanuman rejoiced. Those who abandon a refugee, judging him harmful, are sinful wretches; to look at them is a loss.
Three Awadhi words carry the lesson. Saranagata is one who has come under shelter: sarana is refuge, and agata is arrived. Pana is a vow, something a person has bound himself to and will not trade for convenience. Anahita means what is not for one's good, a harm or a threat. The story runs as follows. Vibhishana crosses the sea, and the monkeys see him coming and suspect a spy sent by an enemy. They hold him back and report to Sugriva. Sugriva goes to Rama and says that Ravana's brother has come to meet him. Rama asks what the friends advise. Sugriva answers that a demon's magic cannot be read, that the visitor can take any shape, and that he has likely come to steal their secrets, so he should be bound and kept. Rama tells him he has reasoned well by the rules of policy. Then he states his own vow, which is to remove the fear of whoever comes for shelter. Hearing this, Hanuman is glad. Tulsidas calls Rama saranagata-bacchala, one who treats the refugee as a calf is treated by its mother. The doha gives the teaching. Those who turn away a refugee because they reckon him a danger are pamvara, lowly, and papamaya, made of sin. Even looking at them is a loss, hani. Rama's word on this is that a refuge is not weighed against the risk.
A traveller knocks at a door in heavy rain. The people inside may peer through the window and wonder if he is a thief. A house that keeps its door open to anyone caught in the storm answers without looking. Rama's vow is that open door, and the suspicion is the window.
