Meaning · English

Vibhishana crossed the sea; the monkeys took him for a spy. Sugriva urged binding him. Rama's vow is to end the fear of those who take refuge. Whoever abandons a refugee, thinking him an enemy, is wretched and sinful; to see him is loss.

Three words carry it. Saranagata is one who has come into shelter: sarana is a refuge, and the word names the person who has walked into it. Bheda is a secret, here the army's weak points that a spy would carry off. Pana is a vow, a promise a person has fixed in himself. The story runs like this. Vibhishana crosses the sea, and the monkeys, seeing a demon's brother arrive, hold him and report to Sugriva. Sugriva tells Rama that a demon's magic cannot be read and its form can change. He thinks Vibhishana has come to steal their plans, and he would tie him up. Rama asks what the monkeys advise, then answers that Sugriva has reasoned well on policy, but that his own vow is to remove the fear of those who come for shelter. Hanuman is glad to hear it, since the Lord, in Tulsidas's phrase, loves those who take refuge. The doha is the teaching drawn out. Tulsidas says those who drop a refugee because they suspect him are wretched and full of sin, and even seeing them is a loss. Sugriva's caution is sensible, so the question is how far caution may go. Tulsidas's answer is that suspicion does not outrank a promise of shelter. The line asks the listener to notice how quickly doubt becomes a reason to refuse.

A lamp left burning on a porch in a storm. A neighbour could put it out for fear the stranger at the gate is a thief, and then every traveller, thief or not, walks on in the dark. Rama's vow keeps the lamp lit for whoever comes.
