The moment Vibhishana left, the lives in Lanka began to shorten. Scorning a saint ruins everything, says Shiva. Glad, Vibhishana walks to Rama: I will see those soft red feet that freed the sage's wife, the feet Bharata held in mind through sandals. Today, with these eyes.

Shiva is telling Parvati, whom he calls Bhavani, and he opens with a judgment. The moment Vibhishana turned to go, everyone left in Lanka became ayu-hina, short of life. Shiva's reason is plain: avajna, disrespect toward a sadhu, destroys every good thing at once. Ravana drove out his own brother, and that same hour his bibhava, his wealth and glory, left him. Shiva calls him abhaga, unlucky. Then the scene turns to Vibhishana. He walks off glad, and his mind is full of manoratha, the wishes the heart carries as it goes. The wish is simple: to see. He pictures Rama's carana-jalajata, lotus feet, aruna and mridula, red and soft, and sevaka sukha-data, giving ease to those who serve. He recalls two things those feet did. One touch freed the sage's wife, and it made Dandaka forest holy. The doha ends on Bharata. He kept his mind fixed on Rama's sandals, the paduka, while Rama was away. Vibhishana says he will see those very feet today, with these eyes. Tulsidas gives the reason for the joy: the feet are known by what they have done. Vibhishana knows them only by hearing, and now he is going to see them himself.

A child on a long train ride has studied a grandparent's photograph for years. All the way, the child rehearses the face at the window, the hands, the doorway. The photograph is the stories Vibhishana has heard of Rama's feet. The platform where the real face waits is the sight he is walking toward.
