Meaning · English

Ravana cast him off, and his fortune left too. Glad, Vibhishana walked toward Rama, thinking: I will see the soft red lotus feet that freed the sage's wife and cleansed Dandaka, the feet whose sandals held Bharata's mind. Today my eyes will see them.

Shiva tells Parvati two things here, a warning and then a journey. The warning comes first. Insulting a saint, Shiva says, ends a person's welfare at once. Ravana's court lost its span of life when Vibhishana was thrown out, and Ravana's prosperity went the moment he abandoned his brother. The loss is Ravana's. Vibhishana loses nothing. He walks off glad. Then the journey. The word manoratha means a wish, literally the chariot of the mind, and Vibhishana's mind carries many of them as he goes. What he pictures is feet. He calls them charan-jalajata, lotus feet, and says they are aruna, red, and mridula, soft. He calls them sevak sukha-data, the givers of joy to those who serve. He then recalls two stories of those feet. Their touch freed the sage's wife, Ahalya, who had been turned to stone. And Dandaka forest became pure where they walked. The doha ends on Bharata. Bharata kept his mind on the sandals of those same feet during Rama's exile. Vibhishana says that today, with these very eyes, he goes to see them. Tulsidas shows what pulls him: a longing for the person whose feet have already done good to so many.

Someone has kept a loved relative's worn shoes by the door for years, touching them every morning. Then the day comes to walk to the relative's house. Bharata's sandals are those shoes, and Vibhishana is the one finally setting out to see the feet themselves.
