Vibhishana speaks wise words, in line with the old books. Ravana rises in anger: death has come near you, fool. You live on my food and love my enemy. He kicks him; Vibhishana clasps his feet again and again, then rises with his ministers: Rama's resolve is true, the court is bound by death, I go to Raghubir's refuge. Do not blame me.

The verse tells a short story, then Vibhishana's farewell. Take three words first. Nīti is right conduct, the way a ruler should act. Sarana is refuge, a place to be kept safe. Kāla-basa means under the sway of Time, here death. Vibhishana has spoken counsel that the Puranas and Vedas, the Shruti, would accept. Ravana hears it and flares with anger. He tells him death has come close, that he lives in Lanka and yet loves the enemy, that there is no one in the world his arms have not beaten. He tells him to go and teach nīti to the ascetics he loves. Then he kicks him. Tulsidas shows Vibhishana answering with no blow: he takes his brother's feet, again and again. Shiva tells Parvati this is the mark of a saint, who does good even to the one who does him wrong. Then Vibhishana rises, takes his ministers, and goes through the sky. He says aloud that Rama's resolve never fails, that Ravana's court is held by Time, and that he goes to Raghubir for refuge. He asks not to be blamed. The scene answers a question: how does one leave a brother who will not listen? Gently, openly, and with the reason said.

A man warns his neighbour that the old beam over the neighbour's door is cracked. The neighbour shouts him out. The man bows, steps back, and walks to a sound house down the lane. The beam is Ravana's court, the sound house is Rama.
