Meaning · English
Malyavanta, the wise minister, hears and is glad. Ravana calls both fools who praise the foe. Vibhishana, hands folded, says good sense and bad sense live in every heart. Clasping his feet: give Sita back to Rama, and no harm comes to you.
Three Awadhi words carry this. Sumati is good sense, a mind that sees what helps. Kumati is its opposite, a mind that sees wrongly. Hita is what truly benefits, ahita what harms. Malyavanta, Ravana's old and shrewd minister, is pleased by Vibhishana's words. He tells Ravana that his younger brother is an ornament of policy and that he should take the words to heart. Ravana answers with anger. Reciters usually read the line about two fools praising the enemy as his, and he tells his men to drive them off. Malyavanta goes home. Vibhishana stays and speaks again, hands joined. He does not argue back. He says the Puranas and Vedas teach that both sumati and kumati dwell in every heart. Then he names what he sees in Ravana: kumati has settled in him and turned everything around. He takes benefit for harm, and an enemy for a friend. The couplet is the plea itself. Vibhishana takes hold of his brother's feet and asks him to keep him as his own dear one. He asks only that Sita be given to Rama, so that no harm reaches Ravana. The teaching is that a wrong turn of mind can be seen from outside, and a brother is the one who says so.
A man drives at night with a compass that has swung ninety degrees. Every turn he takes feels like the right one, and the friend beside him sees the road signs say otherwise. Ravana's mind is that compass, and Vibhishana is the friend reading the signs.
