Meaning · English
Arjuna said: I see the gods within your body, Lord, and with them hosts of every kind of being; Brahma seated on his lotus, Shiv, all the sages, and the divine serpents.
Arjuna is speaking, and what follows is what he sees, in his own words. Three words carry it. Pashyami means I behold: it is seeing, not guessing or being told. Deha means body, and Arjuna says all of this stands within Krishna's body. Bhuta-vishesha-sanghan means hosts of beings of different kinds: not one sort of creature but every sort gathered together. Arjuna names who he sees: the gods, Brahma seated on a lotus, Shiv, the sages, and the divine serpents. Each is a figure he already knew from outside, and now he finds them inside one form. The reason is in the story: Krishna had given him a special sight so he could see what words could not carry. This is Arjuna's account in that moment, the first thing he reports. The commentators read the vision differently. Shankara takes the form as the one Self showing itself as the many, with the many resting on it. Ramanuja reads it as the world being the body of the Lord, who remains its inner ruler. Madhva stresses that the Lord stays wholly distinct from, and above, everything he holds. All three agree that Arjuna sees every being gathered in Krishna.
Picture a railway station map hung at the entrance, with every platform, every line, and every town it serves drawn on one sheet. A traveler who only knew his own platform now sees how all of it joins. Arjuna's view is like that: beings he knew one by one, now seen together in a single frame.
1. Choose one ordinary place today: a bus stop, a market lane, your own street. Stand or sit there for five minutes. 2. Look slowly at the different kinds of beings there: people, birds, dogs, insects, trees. 3. For each, quietly name one thing it depends on that you also depend on, such as air, water, or daylight. 4. Before leaving, notice whether the place looks like a crowd of strangers or like one gathering.
A woman stands at the back of a crowded hospital corridor at night, waiting for news of her father. Everyone around her is a stranger: a boy asleep on a bench, a guard, a nurse hurrying by. She feels entirely alone with her fear. Arjuna's report speaks to such a moment by showing a different way of seeing. He sees many kinds of beings, not as scattered strangers but all held within one body. In her corridor, that would change the picture in steps. She would first notice the boy, the guard, and the nurse as people waiting, working, and worrying just as she is. She would then see that her fear is shared, not private. Ordinary experience bears this out: a worry feels lighter when we see others carrying their own. The verse does not promise her father will recover, and it does not take the fear away. It is Arjuna's account of what he saw, in a moment of given vision, and not a method for producing that vision at will. It offers a way of looking, nothing more.
