Meaning · English
I see you everywhere, with countless arms, bellies, mouths and eyes, your form without limit in every direction. Lord of the universe, in your universal form I find no end, no middle, and no beginning.
Arjuna is the speaker, and this is what he sees in that moment. Three words carry it. Aneka means not one, many without count, and it is joined to arms, stomachs, faces and eyes. Ananta-rupa is ananta, without end, plus rupa, form: a form with no boundary. Sarvatah means on every side, so there is no front from which he looks at it. He then says he finds no end, no middle and no beginning. A thing with no edges cannot be measured or gathered into one view, and Arjuna says so plainly. He also uses two titles, Vishveshvara, lord of the universe, and Vishvarupa, the universal form, because the one he sat beside on the chariot now appears as the whole. The reason he speaks is simple: he has asked to see, he has been given sight, and he reports what he sees. Every clause is a report, and none is a teaching. Shankara reads the form as the Lord's power of appearance, resting on the one Self beneath it. Ramanuja reads it as the real body of the Lord, with all beings as its parts. Madhva reads it as a true display of the Lord's greatness, while the Lord remains distinct from the world he shows.
Picture standing at the shore on a foggy morning and looking out at the sea. No far bank shows, no line where water meets sky, and the grey runs past both sides of your eyes. Arjuna's report maps to this: a sight with no edge to hold on to, so the one looking has nowhere to stand outside it.
1. Tonight, step outside for five minutes after dark, or stand at a window if that is easier. 2. Look at the sky and try to find where it begins or ends. Notice that you cannot. 3. Notice what your mind does when it meets something with no edge: whether it hurries to name it, shrinks from it, or goes quiet. 4. Say nothing and conclude nothing. Come back inside when the five minutes are done.
A man stands in the hall of a hospital where his wife is being operated on. A clock on the wall, a corridor, and a door he cannot open. He has asked every question he can, and the answers have run out. He can see only a small part of what is happening to her, and the rest is out of his sight. Arjuna's words give him a way to hold that. A person can look at what is far larger than his understanding and say, plainly, I see no end to it, no middle, no beginning. That is an honest report and needs no further claim. He can stop trying to measure what cannot be measured, sit down, breathe, and wait with his hands open. Ordinary experience confirms that people who admit the size of what they face often grow calmer than those who keep demanding a full account. The verse does not promise that his wife will recover. It does not remove fear, and it does not replace the surgeon, the nurse or the doctor's word.
