Burning With Its Own Light

Bhagavad Gita 11.19

Meaning · English

I see you blazing like a fire in every direction, and with your own radiance this entire universe is heated and scorched, glowing in the heat of you.

Arjuna is describing what he sees, and three words carry it. Sva means one's own. Tejas means radiance, brilliance, and also heat, the kind a flame gives off. Tapantam comes from the root tap, to heat or burn, and the same root gives tapas, the heat of austerity. Vishva means the whole, everything that exists. Put together, Arjuna sees the entire universe being warmed and burned by a light that belongs to Krishna alone. Nothing lends it to him, and nothing outside him feeds it. The reason for the words is Arjuna's state. He asked to see the cosmic form, and now he is stunned. He reaches for the nearest things he knows, fire and the sun, and finds even those too small. He is not offering a teaching here. This is his view in that moment, spoken in awe and fear. Shankara reads the radiance as the Lord's own power, needing nothing else to shine. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord's glory, with the world resting in him as his body. Madhva stresses that only the Lord is independent, and everything else is warmed by a light that is not its own. The verse leaves the listener with a plain picture to stay with: one source, and a whole world heated by it.

A bonfire on a cold night. People stand in a ring, faces glowing, hands out. The fire takes nothing from them and warms them all the same, and if they stand too close it burns. The fire is the source Arjuna sees, the ring is the universe, and the heat is felt by everything near it.

1. Tomorrow morning, stand in direct sunlight for five minutes, outdoors or at an open window, and feel the warmth on your face and hands. 2. Notice that you did nothing to earn it, and that it reached you without asking anything. 3. At your next meal, before the first bite, name one thing on the plate that grew in sunlight.

A fisherman hauls in his net at noon, the sun hard on his back and the water throwing it up into his eyes. He squints, wipes his neck, and keeps pulling. Arjuna's words would fit that moment. The heat on his skin is the same light that raised the fish's food and dries his nets, and it works on him without any regard for his worry about the price at the market. For a moment the worry is small beside something so large and so steady. The verse gives him a way to see the sun as a single source of warmth and danger together, which is what Arjuna sees in Krishna: a light that gives life and can also scorch. Ordinary experience agrees that the same sun that ripens grain also burns skin left too long unprotected. The verse does not promise that the worry will go, that the catch will be good, or that the heat will not harm him. A sunburn still needs shade and water. It gives him a larger picture to stand inside while he works.
