The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 11 · The Universal Form

The Imperishable Support

Bhagavad Gita 11.18

Meaning · English

You are the imperishable, the supreme being worth knowing. You are the highest support of this creation. You are eternal, protector of the everlasting dharma, the Supreme Divine Person. So I hold, in my opinion.

Arjuna has just seen the whole form, and now he tries to name it. A few words carry the verse. Akshara means what does not perish, what is still there when everything else is used up. Nidhana means a resting place or foundation, the thing a house stands on. Purusha means a person, and the text uses it for the Supreme Divine Person, so what Arjuna sees is someone, not only a force. He says Krishna is the imperishable, the supreme one worth knowing, and the highest support of the whole creation. He adds that Krishna does not decay, guards the everlasting dharma (the right order of things), and is a person beyond measure. Then he closes with a small phrase: this is my opinion. He speaks as a shaken man reasoning aloud, giving his own reading of what he has seen, not a ruling. The reason is in the scene. After endless faces, arms and fire, a mind needs somewhere to stand. Calling the sight a support and a protector turns his terror toward trust. Shankara reads the imperishable as Brahman, the one reality to be known for liberation. Ramanuja reads it as the personal Lord who holds up all beings and souls. Madhva reads it as Vishnu, supreme and distinct from the world he supports.

A stone pier of an old bridge stands in a flooded stream. Logs, mud and foam rush past it, and the road above stays level because the pier does not move. Arjuna sees the whole churning world and says the one thing it all rests on is Krishna.

1. Tonight, take five minutes and a piece of paper. Write down one thing this week that feels too big or frightening. 2. Beside it, write what actually holds you up: a person, a habit, a belief, a place. Use plain words. 3. Write one sentence beginning with "My view is..." about what you trust, and leave room to change it later. 4. Read both lines aloud once. Notice whether your breathing or shoulders settle even slightly.

A mother sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning while her daughter is in surgery. Her mind runs through every what-if, and each one opens into another. Arjuna's words show a way through such a moment, step by step. First, he looks at the huge thing in front of him instead of turning away. Second, he asks what it rests on. Third, he says it out loud in plain words, and he marks it as his own view. The mother might say it to herself: the surgeon's skill, her husband's hand on her shoulder, her prayer. Ordinary experience bears out that a fear put into words often loosens its hold a little. The verse does not promise that the surgery will go well, and it does not take grief or danger away. It is no substitute for the doctors doing their work. What it gives is a place to stand while the waiting goes on.
