Meaning · English
Through these evil deeds of those who destroy the family, which cause unwanted progeny, the welfare activities of society and family, and the family traditions, which are eternal, are ruined.
This is Arjuna's argument, and it is his view in that moment, not the book's teaching. Three phrases carry it. Varna-sankara means mixed or unwanted progeny, the confusion of lines that Arjuna fears when a family's order breaks. Jati-dharma means the duties and welfare work that belong to a whole community. Kula-dharma means the customs a single family keeps: its rites, its manners, what it hands down. Arjuna says that killing relatives is an evil deed, and that this deed spreads a confusion of lines. That confusion ruins both kinds of dharma, the community's and the family's. He calls them lasting, so what he fears is the loss of something meant to endure. He is not counting the dead alone. He is counting what dies with them: the knowledge of how to live together, which no one is left to pass on. Behind this sits grief. He cannot picture a victory worth that price. The classical commentators, Shankara, Ramanuja and Madhva, each treat his speech as the voice of sorrow and attachment that Krishna must answer, not as settled doctrine. Shankara in particular reads it as grief born of attachment. Here the verse asks nothing of the listener. It shows a good man's reasoning while he is overwhelmed.
A footpath across a field exists because many feet walked it, season after season. If the walkers stop, grass closes over it within a few years, and a stranger cannot tell a way was ever there. Arjuna fears the same for a family's customs: nothing is destroyed on purpose, but once the carriers are gone, the path vanishes.
1. Today, pick one small custom your family keeps, such as a meal, a greeting or a festival habit. 2. Ask the person who knows it best how it began, and write down two lines of their answer. 3. Notice any dread you feel when you picture it being lost. Sit with that feeling for a minute without trying to fix it. 4. This week, do the custom once with someone younger watching.
A woman stands in her kitchen the evening before her daughter's wedding. Her mother-in-law died last year, and nobody knows how to make the sweet that has opened every family celebration for decades. The recipe was never written down. She feels something larger than a missing dish: a thread has frayed. That is the ache Arjuna names. He sees that the loss of a family's ways is a real loss, felt by the living and not only by the dead. Arjuna's words would not give her the recipe. They would let her say what she is mourning, and see that it is the passing-on that matters, which makes asking, writing down and cooking beside someone worth doing now. Ordinary experience confirms that customs last only while someone is willing to teach them. The verse does not promise that every custom can be saved, and it does not ease the sorrow of what is already gone. It is also one grieving man's argument, spoken before the battle, and not a judgment on anyone's choices.
