Meaning · English
Bhrigu asked father Varuna for Brahman. Varuna named food, breath, eye, ear, mind, speech: 'Beings are born from it, live by it, return into it. Seek that.' Bhrigu practised tapas.
Bhrigu wants to know Brahman, the reality behind everything. His father gives no definition. He names six things close at hand: food, breath, sight, hearing, mind and speech. These are places to start looking. Then he gives a test. Whatever beings are born from, are kept alive by, and go back into at death is Brahman. Bhrigu is told to seek that himself. Tapas means hard, focused inner effort, and Bhrigu takes it up at once instead of asking for more words.
Drop ice cubes into a glass of water. They were frozen from that water, they float in it while they last, and as they melt they become it again. The water is there before, during and after each cube. Varuna's test asks for the same kind of thing: what is present at a being's birth, through its life, and at its end.
