Meaning · English
He saw food is Brahman: from food beings are born, by food they live, into food they return. He went back to Varuna: 'Teach me Brahman.' 'Seek it through tapas.'
Brahman is the word for the source of all things: what they are born from, what keeps them alive, and what they go back into. Bhrigu holds food up against that test and it passes. A body is made of what was eaten, runs on what is eaten, and at death is eaten in turn. Yet he returns to his father asking again, so the answer has not settled him. Varuna offers no definition, only a method: tapas, steady and demanding effort. He even calls that effort Brahman.
A compost heap behind a kitchen: peelings and scraps go in, break down into soil, and that soil feeds the tomato plants. The tomatoes get eaten, and their stems and skins go back on the heap. Nothing in the garden stands outside that loop. Bhrigu sees living things the same way: raised from food, kept by food, returned to food.
