Meaning · English
He saw that breath is Brahman: beings are born from breath, live by it, and return into it. Asked again, Varuna sent him back to tapas.
Breath here is the life-force, the moving energy that keeps a body working, more than air in the lungs. Bhrigu holds it up to a three-part test: what beings are born from, live by, and dissolve into. Breath seems to pass. A baby's life starts with a breath and ends with the last one. Still he goes back to his father. Varuna gives the same reply: search through tapas, a sustained inward effort of attention. Calling tapas Brahman puts the weight on the searching itself, not on any answer handed over.
A boat's sail hangs limp at the dock. When wind fills it, it takes shape and pulls the boat along. When the wind drops, it sags back into loose cloth. Bhrigu sees living beings the same way: breath gives the body its form at birth, keeps it moving through life, and when it leaves, the body falls slack.
