Meaning · English
He saw that mind is Brahman: from mind beings arise, by mind they live, into mind they go at death. Again he asked Varuna, and was told: seek through tapas.
Brahman is the name for whatever everything comes from, lives by, and goes back into. Bhrigu tests mind against those three marks, and it seems to pass. Creatures come into being through it, keep going by it, and end in it. Still he returns to his father. Varuna gives him nothing new. He repeats the same instruction: seek it through tapas, a steady, heated effort of attention. He adds that tapas itself is Brahman. Bhrigu does the work, and the sentence breaks off there.
Someone digging a well hits a layer of wet clay. It is cool and damp, and it looks like the place the water comes from. Then a little water keeps seeping up from underneath it. Mind is that wet clay. It fits every sign Bhrigu was looking for, but something still rises from below, so he keeps digging.
