Understanding as Brahman

Meaning · English

Bhrigu saw that understanding is Brahman: beings are born from it, live by it, merge into it. Again he asked Varuna to teach him. 'Seek it by tapas.' He practiced it.

Bhrigu's new answer is understanding: the power in us that knows, judges and decides. He tests it the way he tested each earlier answer. Does everything come from it, stay alive by it, and go back into it? It seems to pass all three. Still, he does not stop. He goes back to his father and asks again. Tapas means focused, disciplined effort, a steady heat of attention. Varuna gives no new teaching. He repeats the same instruction: keep searching by tapas.

Picture climbing a stairwell in a tall building. Each landing has a window and a door, and from inside it can feel like the top floor. Only when you notice another flight going up do you see it was a landing. Understanding is that kind of landing: solid, real, and reached by honest climbing.
