Meaning · English

Do not scorn food; that is the vow. Breath is food, the body its eater; each rests on the other. Whoever knows this stands firm and grows great.

The vow is simple: never speak badly of food. The reason follows. Breath counts as food and the body as its eater, because breath lives inside the body. Yet the body also needs breath to keep standing. So each feeds the other and each holds the other up, food resting on food. The text says whoever grasps this becomes steady, has food and enjoys it, and becomes great in children, cattle, the brightness of sacred learning, and good name.

Picture two playing cards leaned together at the top to form a small tent on a table. Neither card can stand alone. Each one is both the weight pressing in and the support pushing back. Pull one away and both fall flat. Breath and body work the same way: each carries the other and is carried by it.
