Mercy That Breaks Pride
Lingashtakam 2
Meaning · English
The linga honored by gods and the foremost sages, a store of mercy, the one who burned Kama, who broke Ravana's pride: to that ever-auspicious linga I bow.
Gods and the foremost sages honor this linga. The next phrase holds two things together. The one who burned Kama, the god of desire, is also called a mine of mercy, so fierceness and kindness sit in a single name. Then Ravana, the proud king, appears, and what the linga destroys is his pride, the swelling that comes with power. The closing line stays the same as before. Whatever these deeds, the speaker's answer is simply to bow to that ever-auspicious linga.
Picture a gardener cutting an overgrown rose bush hard in winter. The cuts look harsh, and whole canes come away. Yet every cut is made out of care for the plant, so it can flower again in spring. The hand that clears the overgrowth is the same hand that tends. Burning desire and breaking pride sit beside mercy the same way.
