Fragrance That Grows Understanding

Lingashtakam 3

सर्वसुगन्धसुलेपितलिङ्गम् बुद्धिविवर्धनकारणलिङ्गम् । सिद्धसुरासुरवन्दितलिङ्गम् तत्प्रणमामि सदाशिवलिङ्गम्

Meaning · English

The linga anointed with every fragrance, the linga that makes understanding grow, the linga honored by perfected sages, gods and demons. To that Sadashiva linga I bow.

Three things are said about the linga, the stone form in which Shiva is worshipped. First, it is coated with every kind of fragrant paste; worshippers bring their best scents to it. Second, it is the cause of understanding growing; the one being honored is also the source of a clearer mind. Third, the ones who bow to it are perfected sages, gods and demons together, beings who usually stand on opposite sides. Then the line closes, as every line does, with a bow to Sadashiva.

Picture someone rubbing scented paste onto a stone in a closed room. Nobody has to stand close. Within a minute everyone in the room smells it, friend or stranger. That is the shape of the verse: what is offered at the stone does not stay on the stone. Understanding grows in whoever comes near, and both gods and demons come.

अर्थ · हिन्दी

सब सुगंधों से लिप्त लिंग, बुद्धि को बढ़ाने वाला लिंग, सिद्ध मुनियों, देवताओं और असुरों से पूजित लिंग। उस सदाशिव लिंग को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।

लिंग, यानी पत्थर का वह रूप जिसमें शिव की पूजा होती है, उसके बारे में तीन बातें कही गई हैं। पहली, उस पर हर प्रकार का सुगंधित लेप चढ़ाया जाता है; भक्त अपनी सबसे अच्छी सुगंधें उसके पास लाते हैं। दूसरी, वह बुद्धि के बढ़ने का कारण है; जिसका सम्मान हो रहा है, वही स्पष्ट मन का स्रोत भी है। तीसरी, उसके आगे झुकने वाले सिद्ध मुनि, देवता और असुर एक साथ हैं, जो प्रायः एक-दूसरे के विरोधी पक्षों में खड़े रहते हैं। फिर हर पंक्ति की तरह यह पंक्ति भी सदाशिव को प्रणाम के साथ समाप्त होती है।

कल्पना कीजिए कि कोई बंद कमरे में एक पत्थर पर सुगंधित लेप मल रहा है। किसी को पास खड़े होने की आवश्यकता नहीं होती। एक मिनट के भीतर कमरे में हर किसी तक उसकी सुगंध पहुँच जाती है, चाहे वह मित्र हो या अजनबी। श्लोक की बनावट भी यही है: पत्थर पर जो अर्पित किया जाता है, वह पत्थर पर ही नहीं रुकता। जो भी पास आता है उसमें बुद्धि बढ़ती है, और देवता तथा असुर दोनों आते हैं।
