Gold, Serpent, Ended Rite

Meaning · English
Adorned with gold and great jewels, made beautiful by the coiled king of serpents, the linga that ended Daksha's grand sacrifice: to that ever-auspicious Shiva linga I bow.
The linga is dressed in gold and large gems, the way people adorn what they treasure most. The king of serpents is coiled around it, and that coil is called beautiful, not frightening. Then the line turns: this same linga ended Daksha's great sacrifice. The hymn only names that event and does not tell the story. Rich ornament, a living snake, and a grand ritual brought to a stop all belong to one Shiva, and the singer bows to him.
Think of the banyan in a village square. People tie bright cloth and brass bells to its branches. A cobra lives among its roots. Its roots once cracked a wall built too close. Nobody calls these three different trees. The linga is like that: jewels, serpent, and the power to end Daksha's rite belong to one presence.
