Lingashtakam 5
कुङ्कुमचन्दनलेपितलिङ्गम् पङ्कजहारसुशोभितलिङ्गम् । सञ्चितपापविनाशनलिङ्गम् तत्प्रणमामि सदाशिवलिङ्गम्
Meaning · English
The linga smeared with kumkum and sandal paste, lovely with lotus garlands, destroying wrongs piled up over time: to that Sadashiva linga I always bow.
The first two lines describe the linga after someone has worshipped it. Red kumkum powder and cool sandal paste have been smeared over it, and a garland of lotuses hangs on it, making it beautiful. The third line turns from how it looks to what it does. It destroys wrongs that have been gathered up and piled together over time. That means the whole store, not a single slip. The last line is the refrain: to that linga of Sadashiva, Shiva who is always auspicious, I bow.
A shelf nobody has dusted in a year carries a grey layer you only notice when a finger leaves a clean stripe. One pass of a damp cloth lifts all of it, the old dust with the new. The verse's word for wrongs is like that layer: gathered slowly, unnoticed, and taken away whole.

जो लिंग कुमकुम और चंदन के लेप से लिपा है, कमल की मालाओं से सुंदर लगता है और समय के साथ जमा हुए पापों का नाश करता है, उस सदाशिव लिंग को मैं सदा प्रणाम करता हूँ।
पहली दो पंक्तियाँ पूजा हो चुकने के बाद के लिंग का वर्णन करती हैं। उस पर लाल कुमकुम और शीतल चंदन का लेप लगाया गया है, और कमलों की एक माला उस पर लटक रही है, जिससे वह सुंदर लगता है। तीसरी पंक्ति उसके रूप से हटकर उसके काम की ओर मुड़ती है। वह उन पापों का नाश करता है जो समय के साथ इकट्ठे होकर ढेर बन गए हैं। इसका अर्थ है पूरा संचय, कोई एक भूल नहीं। अंतिम पंक्ति टेक है: सदाशिव के उस लिंग को, उन शिव को जो सदा मंगलमय हैं, मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।
जिस ताक की साल भर से किसी ने धूल नहीं झाड़ी, उस पर एक धूसर परत जम जाती है, जिसका पता तभी चलता है जब उँगली फेरने से एक साफ़ लकीर खिंच जाती है। गीले कपड़े का एक हाथ फेरते ही सारी धूल उठ जाती है, पुरानी भी और नई भी। श्लोक में पापों के लिए आया शब्द इसी परत जैसा है: धीरे-धीरे जमा हुआ, अनदेखा, और पूरा का पूरा हटा दिया जाने वाला।
