देवगणार्चितसेवितलिङ्गम् भावैर्भक्तिभिरेव च लिङ्गम् । दिनकरकोटिप्रभाकरलिङ्गम् तत्प्रणमामि सदाशिवलिङ्गम्

Honored and served by the hosts of gods, approached with feeling and devotion, shining like ten million suns: to that ever-auspicious Linga of Shiva I bow.
The line says three things. First, crowds of gods honor the Linga, and they also serve it. They attend to it, the way a household tends someone it loves. Second, it is approached with inner feeling and with devotion, and the line leans on this with an 'indeed': these are what reach it. Gestures alone are not the point. Third, it gives off light like ten million suns at once, brighter than anything the eye could hold. Then comes the refrain that closes every verse: to that ever-auspicious Linga, I bow.
Two birthday cards sit on a table. One is store-bought, with a printed rhyme and a quick signature. The other is plain paper with three lines in the sender's own hand. That is the one kept in a drawer for years. The gods' formal service is the card; feeling and devotion are the handwriting.

देवगणों द्वारा पूजित और सेवित, भाव और भक्ति से जिस तक पहुँचा जाता है, जो करोड़ों सूर्यों जैसा दमकता है, शिव के उस सदा मंगलमय लिंग को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।
यह पंक्ति तीन बातें कहती है। पहली, देवताओं की भीड़ लिंग का सम्मान करती है, और उसकी सेवा भी करती है। वे उसकी देखभाल करते हैं, जैसे कोई घर अपने किसी प्रिय की देखभाल करता है। दूसरी, उस तक भीतर के भाव और भक्ति से पहुँचा जाता है, और पंक्ति यहाँ 'ही' कहकर इस पर ज़ोर देती है: यही उस तक पहुँचते हैं। केवल बाहरी क्रियाएँ असली बात नहीं हैं। तीसरी, वह एक साथ करोड़ों सूर्यों जैसा प्रकाश बिखेरता है, आँख जितना सह सके उससे कहीं अधिक उजला। फिर वह टेक आती है जो हर श्लोक को पूरा करती है: उस सदा मंगलमय लिंग को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ।
मेज़ पर जन्मदिन के दो कार्ड रखे हैं। एक दुकान से खरीदा हुआ है, जिसमें छपी हुई तुकबंदी है और जल्दी में किए गए हस्ताक्षर हैं। दूसरा सादा कागज़ है, जिस पर भेजने वाले ने अपने हाथ से तीन पंक्तियाँ लिखी हैं। वही बरसों तक दराज़ में सँभालकर रखा जाता है। देवताओं की औपचारिक सेवा वह कार्ड है; भाव और भक्ति वह हाथ की लिखावट हैं।
