Eight Petals, Eight Lacks

Lingashtakam 7

Meaning · English

Encircled by an eight-petalled lotus, the Linga that causes all things to arise, the Linga that ends the eight kinds of want: to that ever-auspicious Linga I bow.

Three things are said about the Linga before the refrain. It is ringed by an eight-petalled lotus, set at the centre with petals on every side. It is the cause from which all things arise. It is not one thing among the many but where the many begin. And it ends the eight kinds of poverty. The hymn does not list the eight. Naming them as eight points to want in more than one form, not only an empty purse. Then the singer bows, as in every verse.

Picture a bicycle wheel. Every spoke runs out from the hub, and the hub is the one part that stays at the centre while the rim turns. The Linga sits inside its eight petals the same way. Everything that spreads outward starts from that still middle, and the whole turning depends on it.
