Beyond the Highest

Lingashtakam 8

Meaning · English

Honored by the gods' teacher and their finest, always offered flowers from heaven's garden; beyond the highest, the supreme Self. To that ever-auspicious Linga I bow.

The first line stays in heaven. The gods' own teacher and the finest among the gods worship this Linga. Flowers from the gods' own garden are laid on it, and not just once but always. Then the second line steps past heaven altogether. Beyond the highest means higher than whatever ranks highest, including those worshippers. The supreme Self means it is more than something honored from outside. Its very nature is the Self. The closing bow to the ever-auspicious Linga is the same line that ends every praise.

Climbers kneel on a mountain's highest peak, and the peak still sits inside the sky. The sky is not one more summit above it. It is the open space every summit stands in. The gods who worship are like those peaks, the highest there is. Shiva is beyond them the way the sky is beyond the summit, not simply a taller mountain.
