Sung in Shiva's Presence
Lingashtakam 9
Meaning · English
Whoever recites this holy Lingashtakam in the presence of Shiva reaches the world of Shiva and rejoices there together with Shiva.
The hymn closes by naming what it gives. Three things matter. The eight verses are called holy, something with merit in the very saying of them. The setting is Shiva's presence, close by him rather than far off. And the fruit comes in two steps: the reciter reaches Shiva's world, and then does more than arrive, sharing gladness with Shiva himself. It is not a reward handed down from a distance but company. The promise is the hymn's own, made to whoever recites it.
Think of being invited to a friend's home. Getting through the front door is one thing. Being seated at the table beside the host, sharing the meal and the laughter, is another. The hymn promises both: arriving in Shiva's world is the open door, and rejoicing with Shiva is the seat at his table.
