The Self as Mind
Shiva Sutras 3.1
Meaning · English
The self is the mind, and the mind is the self that wanders, called small.
Three words carry this teaching. Atma means the self; Bhaskara's Varttika draws it from a root meaning to go, so the self is the one who travels. Citta means the mind, from a root meaning to be aware: the gathered habits, impressions and thoughts that work as one instrument. Anu means small, a speck. The sutra says the self is mind. Vasugupta is not calling the self a thing made of thoughts. He is saying that when the self forgets its own nature, it is known as the mind, and it lives as a small, limited traveller. Bhaskara describes it carried from birth to birth by what it has done, moved by old impressions. That is the bondage this chapter goes on to name. The teaching belongs to the anava way, the way of the small individual, who begins from the mind as it is and works there. It opens the third section for that reason: before anything can be loosened, the reader is told what is tied. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini, as I read it, takes the limited mind to be the self itself, shrunk by its own contraction and not a different thing. Bhaskara differs mainly in tracing the word self to the idea of wandering, and in stressing the mind's long travel through births.
A king travels in a plain grey cloak, going from inn to inn, and the innkeepers know only the cloak. The cloak is the mind with all its habits. The king is the self, who walks inside it and answers to its name.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or waiting for a kettle, and give it five minutes. 2. When a thought pulls you away, silently note, 'the mind is going.' Do not argue with it. 3. Notice who is aware of that going. Stay with that noticing for a few breaths. 4. In the evening, recall one moment when you called a passing mood 'I'.
