Knowing That Binds
Shiva Sutras 3.2
Meaning · English
Knowing, in the one who is bound, is itself the bond.
Three words carry this sutra. Jnana is knowing, from the root jna, to know. Bandha is a bond, from the root bandh, to tie. The sutra puts the two side by side with nothing between them. For the limited individual, the knowing is the tie. There is no rope apart from it. The sutra follows 3.1, where the self was said to take the form of mind. If the self works as mind, then whatever the mind knows is how the self is held. The teaching says this knowing is partial. It sees pleasure and pain inside, and bodies and colours outside, all as separate things, and it takes itself to be one small knower among them. That picture is the binding. This is the way of anava, the way of the small, which works with the individual's own mind as it is. No stillness of Shiva is assumed. The student starts with the ordinary act of knowing and sees where it ties. Kshemaraja, in the Vimarshini, takes this knowing to be the limited, divided knowledge of the one bound by maya. Bhaskara's Varttika raises an objection: knowing is light, so how can it bind? He answers that it binds only when it comes from the power of maya. When recognition of the Lord arises by grace, the same knowing no longer binds.
Think of tinted glasses worn so long that the wearer forgets them. Every leaf looks yellow-green, and nothing seems wrong. The tint is not an object in the room. It is the way of seeing. The limited knowing works like that tint, and it holds the wearer without being noticed.
1. Once today, at a quiet moment, notice one thing you are sure you know about someone, such as their mood or motive. 2. Say to yourself, quietly, that this is a picture your mind made, and see whether it has any gaps. 3. In the evening, spend two minutes recalling one moment when your knowing felt like a wall between you and a person or a task. 4. Only notice. Do not try to change anything.
