Not Telling Apart
Shiva Sutras 3.3
Meaning · English
Māyā is the failure to tell apart kalā and the other tattvas.
Three words carry this. Tattva means a basic principle, one of the ingredients out of which a person's experience is built. Kalā is the first of them: a small portion, the narrowing that lets a boundless knower act only a little. Viveka is the power to separate one thing from another. Aviveka is its absence. Māyā comes from the root for measuring. It is the measuring that cuts a whole into pieces. Plainly, then: when the principles that begin with kalā are not told apart from the one who uses them, that is māyā. Their work is to give small abilities, to know a little, to do a little. Taking them for oneself is the mistake. The sutra follows 3.1 and 3.2. If the self appears as mind, and knowing binds, this says how the bond forms. It belongs to the anava way, which works from the individual mind and its own instruments, not from a sudden leap. Bhāskara's Vārttika says these principles, from kalā down to earth, appear as the body and its parts. Taking them as oneself is the deluding māyā. The commentators agree that this is not a thing outside the person. It is a lapse of discernment.
A man wears tinted glasses all day and forgets they are on. He says the whole world is yellow. The glasses are the kalā and the rest. Māyā is not the tint itself but forgetting that anything sits between him and what he sees.
1. Choose one ordinary hour today, such as a walk or a meal. 2. When a thought like "I am bad at this" or "I can't do that" arrives, stop for a breath and name it: "this is a limit I am using." 3. Notice whether the limit is a tool you hold or the whole of who is holding it. 4. In the evening, write down one such moment in a single line.
