Gathering the Body Back

Shiva Sutras 3.4

Meaning · English

Within the body, the parts are gathered back in, withdrawn.

Three words carry the sutra. Sharira is the body, the thing that wears away. Kala is a part, a small piece of power that has been cut off from the whole, and the body is built from many such pieces. Samhara is withdrawal: sam means together, hri means to take, so it is a taking back into one place. Read plainly, the sutra says that in the body the parts are withdrawn. Sutra 3.3 calls the failure to tell the kalas and the other principles apart maya, the veil. Sutra 3.4 then gives the answer: the parts are drawn back into their source, and what was scattered is gathered. This belongs to the anava upaya, the way of the small, individual self, which works through something close at hand such as the body, instead of through a sudden glance (shambhava) or through thought alone (shakta). Bhaskara's Varttika reads it as a meditation in which the body, gross and subtle, is dissolved part by part into its own cause, as if burned in a single fire. It adds that this opens the way to the other methods, up to samadhi. The commentators agree that the sutra concerns the body and its parts, and says nothing about leaving the body behind.

1. Sit with your body at rest and your eyes closed. 2. Rest your attention on one part, such as the hands or the face. 3. Let that part be drawn back into the body as a whole, until you feel no separate edge. 4. Take the next part the same way, until the body is felt as one. 5. When the mind runs off after a thought, gather it back with the part you were on. 6. Stop when the body is felt as one, and rest a moment before you open your eyes.
