Mastering the body's elements
Shiva Sutras 3.5
Meaning · English
The channels drawn in; the elements mastered, left alone, and known as separate.
Six words, taken one at a time. Nadi is a channel, a passage in the body that carries breath and life. Samhara is drawing in, gathering back to one place. Bhuta is an element: earth, water and the others that make up the body. Jaya is mastery. Kaivalya is aloneness, a thing standing by itself. Prthaktva is separateness, a thing known as other than oneself. The sutra gives four steps in a row: the channels are gathered in, the elements are mastered, they are left alone, they are known as apart. Sutra 3.4 spoke of gathering the kalas, the limiting powers, inside the body. This sutra carries the same gathering into the channels and the elements. It belongs to anava, the way of effort, where a person works on body and breath, not to shambhava or shakta. Shiva teaches it because the individual mind, bound by maya, takes the body's elements for itself. The commentators read it as a graded training: the breath-channels are drawn together, attention is held at set places to gain hold over each element, and the mind is then withdrawn from them. Bhaskara adds that such results come through effort and remain tied to the veil of delusion, as 3.6 goes on to say.
1. Sit upright and let the body settle. Let the breath run on by itself. 2. Let your attention gather inward from the whole body, as channels drawing to one place. 3. Notice the body's elements one by one: its weight and solidity, its wetness, its warmth, its moving air, its space. 4. Leave each element alone. Do not try to change it. 5. Notice that you, the one noticing, stand apart from them. When the mind wanders, return to step 3. 6. Stop when the noticing is steady.
