Gain under a veil
Shiva Sutras 3.6
Meaning · English
Accomplishment comes from being covered over by bewilderment.
Three words carry the sutra. Moha is bewilderment, from a root meaning to be dazed. Avarana is a covering, something drawn over a thing so it cannot be seen. Siddhi is accomplishment, a result brought to completion. Taken plainly: an accomplishment can come about while the mind is covered by bewilderment. The text teaches that the individual mind is bound because it forgets what it is. Moha is that forgetting, and it is the work of maya, the power that makes the one appear as many separate things. A mind still under that cover can nonetheless succeed at things. Vasugupta has just described mastery over the body's elements, and this sutra says what such success is worth. It is real, but it is made inside the veil. It sits on the same bondage it seems to overcome. Shiva teaches this in the anava way, the path of effort by a limited self, where achievements pile up and are easily mistaken for the goal. Kshemaraja, in his Vimarshini, takes the accomplishment as arising from this covering, so that one who delights in it stays covered. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that such accomplishment is limited, an enjoyment of particular levels of reality, and not the wide knowing of the highest consciousness.
A man polishes the glass of a lantern until it shines, and he is proud of the shine. But a cloth still hangs over the lantern, so no light reaches the room. The polished glass is the accomplishment. The cloth is the covering of bewilderment.
1. Pick one thing you did well today, at work or at home, and sit with it for two minutes in the evening. 2. Ask plainly: did this success leave me clearer, or only more pleased with myself? 3. Notice if pride or a wish for more arrived with it. Just notice, and do not argue with it. 4. Do this on three evenings this week and see what repeats.
