Where Many-Horned Cattle Roam

Rig Veda 1.154.6

Meaning · English

We long to travel to those homes of yours, where the many-horned cattle roam. There the highest step of the far-ranging bull shines down in great fullness.

The singer wants to reach the place where Vishnu's highest step is set: the last of his three strides, up in the sky. The cattle there have many horns. Sāyaṇa follows the older etymologist Yāska and reads the cows as rays of light, with the horns as beams rising high. Vishnu is called a bull for his strength, and Sāyaṇa adds that he pours out what people long for. The word 'yours' addresses two; Sāyaṇa takes them as the sacrificer and his wife.

Picture a hill temple at dusk, its lamps lit at the very top. Travellers on the road far below cannot climb there yet, but the light already reaches them and shows where the path leads. Vishnu's highest step works like that. It stands far above the singer, yet its brightness falls on those still on the way.
