Longing for His Dear Dwelling

तदस्य प्रियमभि पाथो अश्यां नरो यत्र देवयवो मदन्ति। उरुक्रमस्य स हि बन्धुरित्था विष्णोः पदे परमे मध्व उत्सः

Meaning · English

May I reach his dear dwelling, where those longing for the gods rejoice. The wide-striding one is kin to them: in Vishnu's highest step is a spring of honey.

The seer asks to reach the place Vishnu loves. People who long for the gods are there, glad. Two reasons are given. First, the god of the wide stride is kin to those who come: a relative, not a distant lord. Second, at his highest step there is a spring of honey, sweetness rising up rather than being carried in. Sāyaṇa reads the dwelling as a lasting world beyond the sky, where hunger, age and death are absent and from which no one returns.

Picture coming up the lane to a grandparent's house at a festival. The windows are lit, cousins' voices carry through the door, and the one who opens it is family. No one needs an introduction. Vishnu's highest place is pictured the same way: a home where the host is kin and those gathered already belong.

मैं उनके उस प्रिय धाम तक पहुँचूँ, जहाँ देवताओं की कामना करने वाले आनंदित होते हैं। विशाल डग भरने वाले उनके बंधु हैं: विष्णु के परम पद में मधु का झरना है।

ऋषि उस स्थान तक पहुँचने की प्रार्थना करते हैं जो विष्णु को प्रिय है। वहाँ देवताओं की लालसा रखने वाले लोग प्रसन्न रहते हैं। इसके दो कारण बताए गए हैं। पहला, विशाल डग वाले देवता वहाँ आने वालों के बंधु हैं: कोई दूर के स्वामी नहीं, अपने संबंधी। दूसरा, उनके परम पद पर मधु का झरना है, ऐसी मिठास जो बाहर से लाई नहीं जाती, भीतर से फूटती है। सायण इस धाम को आकाश से परे एक स्थायी लोक मानते हैं, जहाँ भूख, बुढ़ापा और मृत्यु नहीं हैं और जहाँ से कोई लौटकर नहीं आता।

कल्पना कीजिए कि किसी त्योहार पर आप गली से होते हुए दादा-दादी के घर पहुँच रहे हैं। खिड़कियाँ जगमगा रही हैं, चचेरे भाई-बहनों की आवाज़ें दरवाज़े से बाहर तक आ रही हैं, और दरवाज़ा खोलने वाला अपना ही परिवार है। किसी को परिचय देने की ज़रूरत नहीं। विष्णु के परम धाम की कल्पना भी ऐसी ही है: एक घर, जहाँ मेज़बान अपना संबंधी है और वहाँ जुटे लोग पहले से उसके अपने हैं।
