Footsteps Brimming with Honey

Rig Veda 1.154.4

Meaning · English

His three footsteps, full of honey and never failing, rejoice by their own nature. He alone holds up the threefold earth and sky, and all the worlds.

Each place where Vishnu set his foot is full of honey, the sweet drink of the gods, and that store never runs low. The steps are glad by their own nature and need nothing brought to them. Sāyaṇa reads that word as food, so the steps feed and gladden those who shelter in them. Then one god carries the whole frame of things. 'Threefold' is the layered world of earth, air and sky. Sāyaṇa also hears in it three elements, earth, water and fire, or the three times.

A single centre pole lifts a whole canvas tent: the floor, walls and roof all hang taut from it, and a family eats inside out of the rain. Take the pole away and everything sags. Vishnu stands as that one pole for earth, sky and all between, and the shelter he raises is where those inside are fed.
