Praise Sent to the Lone Strider

Rig Veda 1.154.3

Meaning · English

Let my hymn go as strength to Vishnu, the mountain-dwelling bull, praised far and wide, who alone measured this long, outstretched shared home in three steps.

The poet asks that his hymn, the thought he has shaped into words, travel to Vishnu and become strength for him. Vishnu is called a bull, a picture of power and abundance. Sāyaṇa reads it as the one who showers down what people wish for. He lives on the mountains, or, in Sāyaṇa's second reading, in speech itself. The name often taken as 'wide-going' Sāyaṇa reads as 'sung by many'. The weight falls on 'alone': one god, three steps, and the whole shared home of the three worlds is laid out.

Think of a farmer marking out a new field by pacing it, heel to toe, with no rope or tape. Where his steps land, the edges are fixed, and open ground becomes a place others can plant and live on. Vishnu's three strides work the same way: by walking it, one god turns open expanse into a shared, measured home.
